Cromwell, Connecticut, USA. One of a number of chrysalises that Monarch caterpillars formed in the garden near the milkweed plants. This one chose on the underside of a fence rail, living in the shadows. You can see the walls are getting darker and thinner, and wing colors are becoming visible. In a few days this will turn black and the butterfly will emerge. 100mm macro, EXIF f/16, .5 sec, ISO 250.

Very good close up of a Monarch about to come out, and starts its journey. The monarchs we see know have the longest life stage, and will be migrating. tigs=^..^=

Whoa, that's a wonderful shot and detail - our granddaughter came home from school a few years ago and asked her mom if a chrysalises was the same as a cocoon, she had to look it up, lol.

Great natural science, Thad. I think when you get the last image I'll have to snag a copy of each and place them, side-by-side, on a black background, to make a real dynamic "start-to-finish" wallpaper. Danke!
