Cromwell, Connecticut, USA. Only a few minutes after emerging from the chrysalis, the Monarch stays in this position for an hour or more. The wings are still misshapen, and the segments have not moved into position yet. Unable to fly yet, drops of water will fall from the wings over an hour's time. Wings will straighten and dry, segments move into position, followed by the wings flapping slowly. When ready, the Monarch takes its first flight. With no spot visible on the wing, this one is a girl.

Being able to set up this close and the monarch immobilized, the details are incredibly sharp... tiny hairs above the eyes, faint lines of the squares of color that make up the wings of butterflies, and the waxy beveled edges of overlapping elements of the chrysalis, just to name a few. This belongs in any wildlife publication and the cover of an encyclopedia of butterflies in particular. It requires an entire bowling team to get enough thumbs up in the air to do this justice.

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust
