Cromwell, Connecticut, USA. Only a few minutes after emerging from the chrysalis, the Monarch stays in this position for an hour or more. The wings are still misshapen, and the segments have not moved into position yet. Unable to fly yet, drops of water will fall from the wings over an hour's time. Wings will straighten and dry, segments move into position, followed by the wings flapping slowly. When ready, the Monarch takes its first flight. With no spot visible on the wing, this one is a girl.
