On a photo hike yesterday, I went way out in scrubby woods....in an area with tangled terrain, no paths to follow.....and nobody ever goes out there. I was hoping for finding a rattle snake or a coral snake...any kind of snake shot....but aside from a gator or two, a turtle and birds...I was not seeing much wildlife. Being far-sighted...I walked all the way up to a tree...that at first I thought was diseased...and I thought covered in a fungus. I got within 4 feet and could see what looked like heat waves...and duh: yes....it was bees. The honeycombs were approx 4 1/2 FEET in length, and approx 3 feet wide. Nothing like fresh honey with your tea....{ so I drove to the store and bought some....:)

You drove to the store! Where’s your sense of adventure?

Seriously finding a wild hive hanging on a tree is quite a find. It also makes a much better photo than a hole in a tree with bees flying about. I love the folded nature of the honeycomb, it looks almost like a stalactite.

Thanks guys! It was very hard to get it to fit in the shot....and thus, I had to make the borders because in sizing for post, I decided to size for length instead of width...
I'm not that great at sizing photos....:)

O.O

Wow. I love this shot. Excellent.

Now ... don't tell me this was or could have been an Africanized hive. No ... uh ... wait ... stop ... I said ... don't tell me.

p.s. Well done here Terri. This is a great shot.

Nahhhh, I don't think it was africanized bees....as clutzy as my approach/ stmbling upon them was....:)
They were really cool..and I watched them a very long time. I have maybe 10-20 shots...and no matter what...I never can get the sharpness that the photographers here seem to acquire. I would not want to sell the shot to a newspaper..even if they wanted it...coz they'd want to know where and then the bees would be in jeapordy.

You've got a winner here Terri. Not only is the capture a great one, but search the site and I don't believe there another shot of a "beehive" to be found. I've been stung a few times in my years but have forgiven these insects primarily because I LOVE HONEY! LOL A much maligned insect that is extremely important to agriculture. Recent News items have claimed we are losing large numbers of bees in this country. That may not upset too many people until they experience shortages in produce and high prices at the Supermarket. Great Post!!

A little too close for comfort! Nice shot Terri. Honey is good with rum. Usually bees won't create there combs in such an easily observed location. Its usually inside of a hollowed out tree. This is a very unique shot. Well done. =)
