I got another chance to capture this shy shorebird. Again, it was the female that got comfortable with my presence. I like the background better in this shot but preferred the bird in my first image. Canon 20D 100-400mmIS @400mm.
I like this version better Darryl! I just hope that she's not going to do what i think she is, (Eat that poop she's looking at to the right, YUCK!) Nice Image dude!
oooh, nice image, and very nice camera. is it new? is this shot at 400mm (x 1.6 for 640mm) at f/5.6? if so im actually surprised how little blurring there is in the background, however it is enough for this image to have exactly the effect you intended.
Great balance of forms and light / dark areas to frame the bird, excellent control of DOF and sharpness on the subject, great placement of the bird in relation to everything else. With the crop factor, seems like an effective focal length close to 600mm. Did the lens' IS let you hand hold the shot?
This is a wonderful capture, Darryl. I really love it when there is an object in focus in the foreground (like this bird) and the background is all blurry. Nice control of depth of field. Well done.

ok, I'm going out on a limb here, especially since I'm no authority on photography, but for some reason, the blurry image in the background being larger than the bird itself distracts me somewhat. I do like the sharp image of the bird and the colors of the water contrasting with the rocks and bird. It's well-balanced, sorry the blurry rock thing may just be my own quirk,

When I was younger, I caught a killdeer and brought it home to show my parents. They are really pretty little birds up close and this brings me right back. Except, its missing that leering "put me down, damn you!" look :)
