Hardegg is the smallest city in Austria (only 78 inhabitants), situated in northern Austria, directly at the border to the Czech Republic. It is also the center of the national park Thayatal (Thaya Valley).
The river Thaya meanders through some deep gorges, forming a beautiful cluse. Since it is also for several kilometres the border, the region was pretty isolated during the Cold War, so the forests around the river and the river itself were not disturbed.
Today the old bridge over the Thaya at Hardegg is open again, and the national park continues on the Czech side of the river. (In fact, this image was taken from the Czech part of the park.) It's a beautiful area for hiking, and I hope you enjoy the upcoming series!
Thanks in advance for all comments and suggestions!
