Fever Tree : Legend has it that the bark of the fever-tree was first used by the Spanish in the early 1630s when it was given to the Countess of Chinchon, who had contracted malaria. The Countess recovered and the healing properties of the tree were discovered. The healing power of this remarkable tree only became world renowned in the 1820’s when officers of the Indian Army, in an attempt to ward off malaria, mixed quinine (the extract from the bark of the fever-tree) with sugar and water, creating the first Indian Tonic Water. It was made more palatable when they added a little expedient of gin to the mixture. The original gin and tonic was thus born, and soon became the archetypal drink of the British Empire, the origins of which were firmly planted in the ‘fever-tree’.

Good idea Marietha getting tighter on the limbs of the tree rather a wider shot showing the tree as a whole. Otherwise those black patches of what appear to be the peeling bark would be lost and I find they add a great deal to the overall image.

PS ... Is Caedes great or what? I get to see a multitude of excellent photos from around the world AND an education at the same time. Also should I suffer some after affects from consuming one of my favorite summer libations I now have a "tree" to blame instead of the alchohol :) Very nice work my Lady

Just an old "Grampa" who still has a Kodak "Box" camera kicking around the attic ... learning and enjoying the wonders of modern digital photography.

I agree about the angle. I knew about the fever tree, but not all that history. Very interesting Marietha. Great composition.

This was cleverly composed and nicely framed. My other passion is herbal medicine and I appreciate text accompanying this shot. Great work! Thanks.

Very nice and excellent narration which makes the pic even nicer when we know the story behind it. Good work.

The Bible tells us to love our neighbors, and also to love our enemies; probably because generally they are the same people. G. K. Chesterton ........ My Gallery

nice angled shot Mareitha - the contrast is really good between the tree and the sky! and I wouldn't mind trying some of that medication, especially the gin and tonic version! :) :)
