Distractions #3

Continuing from Distractions #2, after a short time I peeked over the porch rail and was pleasantly surprised to see the flowers I had my eye on were abandoned ... no butterflies ... no bees. Seemed odd. Once again I looked through the viewfinder ... the flowers "jiggled". Then there was an unmistakeable "tremor" from within the bush. You haven't lived until you've had your eye glued to a viewfinder close up to a subject and ... a Praying Mantis pokes it's head and jack-knife front legs out in your direction. This BIG BOY (about 5 inches) climbed on top of the flowers and sat there. Gave me a look that indicated he wasn't too thrilled with my spooking his food supply. That was enough for old Muggsy ... I can take a hint. I snapped off a couple of shots and put the lens cap on my camera. Flower pics would have to wait till Springtime.

The entire incident reminded me of a "signature" that Gregg (Egggray) once used, quoting Forrest Gump. I'll paraphrase ... "Nature photography is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get."

John, we must thank you for risking an encounter with this large beast. He looks very impressive - I almost forgot the flowers in the bargain. Excellent clarity of the flowers as well as bad boy Mantis. Great shot!

I used to see a lot of those Praying Mantis' when I was a kid. I always thought they were the most interesting creature on Earth. You captured a nice big one. Great shot, John.

Just one question. Are you sure this one was a male ?
May he RIP then ...
I have heard that they do not live too long ... LOL
But if it was a female - then we have just another image ...

Oh my goodness John! And you have a photo of a Praying Mantis as well??!!!! We moved up to Oregon from Louisiana and that was the last time I saw one of these unique little kritters!! But one that was 5" long?!!! I've never seen one that big! Wowzer! I also love your tale about him. And once again the background is perfect. All I can say is that you must have endless patience!~ But look how it pays off! Congrats...Verena

That is one amazing image John ! I just viewed it in the highest res, and then to learn that the beast is aprox 5 inches ! (that is about 15 CM !!!) Amazing. Furthermore i do like the color and the detail in the flowers. And about the last part of your narrative. That is absolutly right.
