Parting words to me from a "Scary Hairy", sending me packing after having done a number on my head, notice the wood on his beak ... Lord, I'll be scarred for life.

Hairy Woodpeckers are near carbon copies of Downy Woodpeckers except for size. A Hairy is noticeably larger ( 9.5 " vs 6.5 ") and it's beak is considerbly longer.

( I gotta get me a hardhat )

Very nice shot, John. The colours and clarity are very good. 9.5 in. is big for a woodpecker! You must wear a hard hat when you wander. Birds can drop all sorts of things on your head :)

Oh my goodness John!! How much closer can you possibly get to such a gorgeous Birdie!!! I see the "hairs on his chinny chin chin" lol....I am always in awe of your photos as you well know. I sit here and study them and just shake my head and think about the wonderful way you have of lovingly not only take perfect photos, but I can actually feel how you love doing it. Isn't it a great feeling?!! I am SO very happy you posted a new photo...it makes my day shine. I know, I know, I sound a bit silly, but it's the truth! But I tell ya, you are right, you need a hardhat...maybe a bright
red one, so these birdies will see ya loud and clear:)OOps but on the other hand, this Woody has red on his head too...I love his "dots". Thank you John for yet another lovely...hope you are doing well, but I know one thing, the fresh air and the scenery will for sure make ya healthy!! Verena

Great close up, and thanks for the info. These birdes visit my feeder and I thought they were Downy Woodpeckers on steroids.

Just fill in the gaps with a little wood putty, John! lol You'll be good as new and the rain won't get in. :) He's a real beauty and I love the way you got him to give you a profile shot. Clarity is tops, of course!

Such a great closeup Mugz. Your bird shots are stunning. This one is sure a biggun'. There is an old story about a Texas woodpecker but that is for another story.

Great post.

This bird has a petty regal bearing. Almost like he's running for Senate seat...not that I think Congress is for the birds or anything like that 8^0
