This is the famous 'Gherkin', one of London's newest and most visible landmarks. Its address is 30 St Mary Axe and it was designed by Sir Norman Foster. This is a composite of several different shots, it's impossible to get it all into one. Portrait format and the leaning buildings are unavoidable!

That's got to be the most interesting building I have ever see. We need a few like that over here. I think the picture looks good with the leaning buildings. It give it character. Very nice, Nigel.

You really did a good job with this Nigel - it has all come together to make a fine picture with clarity and colours spot on.
What a contrast it is to the other structures, an unual building indeed.
I remember on a Thames river cruise the narrator giving an alternative descriptive name to 'Gherkin' which I will not print :)

Great photo. Excellent colours and saturation. The perspective matches the building well. Framed well for such a tight spot.

Mercy, how crystal clear can you get? Are you sure PS couldn't straighten those buildings up? None the less, I love that glass and the entire image. Great piece of work.

Looks like the home of The Lone Ranger. That is a silver bullet is it not? Nice work Sir Nigel. Great composite.

Total brilliance Nigel! Great composition, and I actually really like the way the buildings are leaning into the picture, only making the Gherkin stand out more. The thing I really like about this, is the way you've captured it from top to bottom, showing off the slightly different architecture at the base of the building. That's something I have never seen in a shot of this. There's also a kind of old and new thing going here with the buildings, and your first post I have seen with a frame, which I think is an excellent choice. Plain and black, simple - but effective. This is one of my favourite shots of yours, rivalling Docklands and can only be saved and faved!

Paul

EDIT Sorry Nigel of course I've seen other posts of yours with borders. The images were obviously SO great I didn't notice the borders....phew....think that one dug me out of a hole....hee hee....lol

The leaning buildings is part of what I like so much about this shot, the lines all pointing to that one perspective point giving more emphasis to the Gherkin "Torpedo" making it a unique and interesting image. I don't think I would like it as much without that effect. Seems more artful because of it to me. It's refreshing to get a close up view of this as well :) Very fine work on the composite, I can't tell where you put the pieces together

I've never actually been that close to this building before Nigel, but observed it many times from the Thames! Makes you feel like you are living in a Space-age City - loving the lines!

The leaning buildings work so beautifully with the "gherkin"! Love the empty streets and the fact that you got the "gherkin" on a blue sky day. It really makes a wonderful postcard. What all is involved in doing a composite and how many different shots is this?

I think that it's a given that The Gherkin looks fantastic but what is special about this image are the leaning buildings. They give a whole different character to the picture and to my, admittedly strange, mind that character is that of a 1930's cartoon. You know the ones that I mean - they date from about the time of the original Popeye cartoons. They are often in black and white and could be quite surrealistic in nature showing dancing buildings or buildings that lean in as if listening.

I said I was strange!!

Hey Nigel,
I remember giving top marks for this one in VB, (~8
I love the angle, the composition from the street works great,
Several different shots, is that HDR or stitching for panorama,
Anyhow, beautifully done,

Thanks for sharing
Kind regards

OMG I can't imagine how they built that building! I had not seen this photo of yours, I guess I'm just now going thru your total gallery, it's very interesting for sure. This is just an amazing photo. I don't know how you do a composite, there are still so many things I need to learn. It almost looks like the old fisheye lenses, the way the buildings 'lean' This is just gorgeous Nigel. Verena
