Remember when your grandpa took you horseback riding in the hills? The world seemed golden and magical - and had a warmth that's hard to find when you grow older. The photo was taken near Stanley, Idaho Now the technical side. This photo was taken into Photoshop. I copied it into a new layer and did a slight gaussian blur on the copy (value=10). I pulled up the Hue/Saturation dialog and checked the Colorize check box and set the hue for a warm earthy color. Then I set the blending mode for the copied layer to "overlay" and reduced the layer's opacity slightly. That's what gives this photo the dreamlike quality it has. Hope you enjoy.

Well, in my case, it wasn't grandpa but my dad who took me, and the scenery not so beautiful as here...as it turned out I fell off too, when my horse decided he'd rather head back to the ranch and made an unexpected abrupt turn...thanks for the memories... nice job, Nathan.:Pat.

Good morning Nathan
As well as a very nice new image, your explanation has given me a hint of other "things" that can do - many thanks.
As for my memories of horsback riding - horses terrified me (still not the animal am most comfortable with, but am better), so sitting on their back was a feat in itself. Then when they got moving, could not make up my mind whether to tell it to go or to stop, so the poor animal probably got confused with the alternating commands <chuckling>.

Nice picture. But if your doing it for the contest thing, that starts on March 15th

Yeah, I heard that from Rob this morning. I just did a quick scan - like I usually do - and missed the start date part. :) Practice run, I guess. Thanks for all the nice comments.

Nathan,

I must say that you have already added a dimension to this assignment (note, not contest) that I hadn't considered. The story invoked by the provider of the image.

I didn't have Grandfather(s) who took me horseback riding ...but I can surely relate to the feeling you describe and is invoked by the beaty of your picture. Nice. Such is the power of the capture and the gift of the sharing.

Thank you.

Wonderful detail and composition on this one Nate.I love how the perspective you've chosen leads the eye down the fence line to the landscape beyond.Wish I had it without the border though.

This photo is a stitched panorama shot. I've heard Caedes is considering allowing us to post nonstandard sizes. This would eliminate the border on many of our panoramas or vertical format shots. Hurray!

Excellent photo(s) and great stitching job! I hope they do allow panoramas! I have a lot I would love to post, bu they are just too wide to add a border on top and bottom.. the pic itself would be too small.
Anyway this gets a 10 from me. nice work.

I never had a grandpa who "took you horseback riding"... What a pity!
I would like that he did it in a so beautiful landscape...
Congrats, Nathan: you are the first "Remember when..." author :-)

I remember when the school took me horseback riding (i.e. when I took a class last year in college) and the horses sounded like engines revving up when they snorted. Hee hee. Nice picture- nice explanation of the process-I might have to try that method.

Hi Daddy!
This photo really makes me want to see the cabins this summer. I've been looking around at some of your newest creations and I really really like what you are doing. I'll be calling NB pretty soon to have him put me together a game CD, and when that comes down I would love an update of your stuff. Oh, thanks for putting a few of my drawings up. I really like the frames you did for them!

Love you lots and miss you more,
Rachael

You should run it through Neat Image to get rid of that noise in the sky. It would make this fabulous shot even better, especially on the higher res sizes :)

I KNEW I knew this place. I think I told you I have stayed in Stanley before and can still remember these scenes..I had the best trout EVER for breakfast that day!! This is a gorgeous photo of course..but its made better by your telling what you did to "improve" it, although I can't help but wonder why a photo of this scene would even need "improving." You are too critical of your own photos eh? hehehe....we expect so much of ourselves...well, I know I do..and I love learning, so you helped me to appreciate waht you did do..thank yu my friend Nathan for this lovely shot!!..verena

Many thanks for the compliments. I'm not too much of a horse person, but your assessment seems to be fairly accurate - at least from my experience.
