Howard Sayles did an Apple Macintosh desktop that I thought, "I wonder if I could create something similar from scratch in Photoshop." Kind of like painting your own version of the Mona Lisa to understand the techniques the artist used. So I learned to define a pattern, work more with glass texture, and basically had a lot of fun. The dragon image came from a public domain clipart collection. Hope you enjoy.

That's a great way to learn new things - by designing an image to a preset standard. You captured Sayles style perfectly. Nice color choice too.

I hold it true that thoughts are things; They're endowed with bodies, breath and wings: And that we send them forth to fill the world with good results, or ill. That which we call our secret thought speeds forth to earth's remotest spot, leaving it's blessings or it's woes like tracks behind it as it goes. We build our future, thought by thought for good or for ill, yet know it not. Yet so the universe was wrought . Thought is another name for fate. Choose then thy destiny and wait, for Love brings Love and Hate brings Hate. - Henry Van Dyke.

as you know Nathan, im quite fond of dragons.. even my paintball team is named Shadow Dragons hehe.. so i couldnt resist looking at this wonderful piece.. the colors are vibrant, yet subtle.. the horizontal lines are a tad distracting for me, but that is a very minor point.. the design is exceptionally clean.. great work..

I prefer this one better... lighter ;-). Actually I personally would prefer to see less shadow than even this one has. Also I would like to see it without the stripes, ie a "cleaner" look. But this is still excellent work, esp. the glass sphere.

Hah .. earlier today I was 2 seconds away from asking if you knew of Howard Sayles and Layne Karkruff

Personally I see this as more of Layne's style than Howard's ... but I've admired both for ages

You might enjoy some of RPGuere's work .. more metallic themes going on

Great work Nathan .. do you work on cars and build patio decks too?
