I have to admit that I've been having fun. This planet and its moons were created by using the render clouds filters in Photoshop. Three layers basically, a black and white base, a green and tan land layer, and a blue on blue water layer. I increased the contrast and brightness of the black and white layer and selected just the black areas, and used that selection to punch holes in the blue layer to let the land show through. I used the emboss filter to give the land a little 3D effect. Then I created the clouds and gave them a drop shadow. Last, I took a circular chunk of it and used the spherize filter on it. The starfield was actually more time consuming to do than the planet and moons. Hope you enjoy.

Oh, by the way, it's an inhabited planet. Can you see the city lights on the dark side of it?

I see em' Nathan, are they friendly though?? LOL Great job my friend and I think the one land mass kinda resembles Australia. I think we need to see a "Gem" planet called Dimora. :-) I'll let you mull that one over. LOL

Thanks for the tutorial disguised as a description. If I were to try all the great ideas you propose, I'd never get out of Photoshop...which would be fine by me..lol..excellent work, of course :)PJ

The Clouds filter in PS really paid off for the planet and moons...I see how you did that...very innovative. They are a bit on the oval side rather than round...but that might be because of the image stretching to fit the resolution...
