In Photoshop, if you take the gradient tool, then set the blending option to "Difference" or "Exclusion" - you can start laying gradient over gradient and get some beautiful surprises. I usually start with a 5000x5000 pixel canvas, and then I can pick the 1600x1200 piece that pleases me most (or, as in this case, 1920x1200 for a wide screen monitor). Then you can use Photoshop's other adjustment tools to play around with the colors, values, and intensity. This piece contains a lot of symbolism, but I won't bore you with it all. :) Have a wonderful evening.
