In Photoshop, if you take the gradient tool, then set the blending option to "Difference" or "Exclusion" - you can start laying gradient over gradient and get some beautiful surprises. I usually start with a 5000x5000 pixel canvas, and then I can pick the 1600x1200 piece that pleases me most (or, as in this case, 1920x1200 for a wide screen monitor). Then you can use Photoshop's other adjustment tools to play around with the colors, values, and intensity. This piece contains a lot of symbolism, but I won't bore you with it all. :) Have a wonderful evening.

OK. You asked for it...
The basic message is, "It's a good thing to be a free spirit - to follow your own path in life, yet be kind and gentle, too."
The butterfly represents a kind and gentle spirit. I certainly don't condone living a lifestyle that harms or impedes others, or impacts them in negative ways. One must be cognizant of the consequences of his/her actions. I prefer the kind of people who leave the world a better place each day than what it was when they got up in the morning. Yet, within those limitations, there's a lot of room to move.
The main butterfly is fully colored in and not following one of the paths through the picture - representing the idea that following your own path makes for a beautiful - and colorful - life.
The other butterflies are just hazy outlines following paths others have determined for them. They need to get out of the rut and explore a little bit.
As always, this is a sermon meant for me. I need to take my advice here, and get out of my rut.
