The Space Shuttle Atlantis streaks skyward as sunlight pierces through the gap between the orbiter and ET assembly. Atlantis lifted off on the 42nd space shuttle flight on August 2, 1991. Another oldie but goldie trawled from the archives and fixed up in Photoshop and Neat Image.

What an incredible view of the shuttle. Never seen a shot like this before. You can just feel the power of the rocket...

Great shot.
Probably taken by one of the onboard cameras, of one of the F-16's that trail the shuttle flights.

NASA doesnt use F-16's for shuttle launch chase planes - it uses a pair of 40 year old WB-57 jets fitted with Ascent Video Experiment, or WAVE project cameras. However, this particular shot was taken by a remote camera at the 275-foot level of the Fixed Surface Structure on the launch pad.
