Atlantis roars into the sky above the sand dunes in the foreground. Mission STS-115 is the 116th space shuttle flight, the 27th flight for orbiter Atlantis, and the 19th U.S. flight to the International Space Station. During the mission, Atlantis' astronauts will deliver and install the 17.5-ton giant solar array that will provide one-fourth of the total power-generation capability for the completed station.

wooohoo ! One more very nice NASA picture. It seems obvious but I was very surprised when I first learned that these pics were taken very far from the launching site itself. This picture allow to see that more efficiently. Good work as always ! ;)

dont believe everything you see on CNN... I guess what you see in frame depends entirely on what angle you are looking from, what filters you have on your cameras, what light and colour you meter your shot on etc etc – as you can see from the Kennedy Media Centre, there are many different angles of the same event taken by the hundreds of cameras around the launch site, angles that I doubt CNN have complete coverage of either. As is usually the case – I have used noise ninja to fix up this image as well as adding a very slight digital ND grad to emphasise the clouds and steam. So not misleading - just looking at something from a different perspective...

My appologies, did not mean to insult you.

First off, there are certain areas set aside for photographers, so there are bound to be shots of different launches taken from the same angle/area. Secondly... I saw the launch go up for real. Neener, neener, neener!!

The work of art may have a moral effect, but to demand moral purpose from an artist is to make him ruin his work. (Johann Wolfgang von Goethe - 1832)

Hello my spacy friend :)...I came here and immediately looked at my 'friends' list to see if you had already posted what is now my new desktop image! Yea, you did! Wheeee.......I really like the angle of this shot, but prefer the other as my desktop. Both have been saved on my hard drive and once again, thank you for all the work you do so that we can enjoy these images with such great clarity and color!

What matters at this precious moment is what has always mattered: the dailiness of life. Everything significant is small and slow.

if only i could hear the roar of these engines.... at a certain point in life (in my case 45) you could think, you might have seen, heard it all before.... but this roar would be new to me and must be a awesome sight............ thanks for sharing !
Pic of the day for me..

I wanted to tell you how beautiful this picture is. I work for ATK Launch Systems and it is nice to see our hard work pay off! I am very jealious that you got to see the shuttle take off. I wish I could get down that way. Take all the pictures you can of the shuttle, for it will soon be gone. Great photo, keep it up!

This is a Magnificent capture of the suttle, WOW. Just gave you a high score in VB and had to come and stop by. My brother worked for NASA but is retired now.

How far away were you when you took this shot?
