The variable star V838 lies near the edge of our Galaxy, about 20,000 light-years from our sun. This stunning image was recorded in September 2006 and spans about 30 light-years edge to edge. Astronomers have found that V838 Mon is likely a young binary star, but the cause of its extraordinary & colourful outbursts remains a mystery.
