Shiveluch Volcano in the Russian Kamchatka Peninsula, photographed by an Expedition 14 crewmember on the ISS. This image was captured on or around March 21 2007, and shows a plume, blowing westward from the summit of the volcano. The volcano subsequently erupted on March 29th. Low clouds wrap around the eastern part of the mountain, obscuring the lower elevations.

As always Phil, you have done a fantastic job of cleaning up / reworking/sizing/ and doing all the things you do to a NASA image to ready it for our eyes. I love the swirl of clouds at the base of the volcano. For some reason, I never thought that volcanic smoke was brown but this image is proving me otherwise. You are also a great teacher for me :)......I learn something from every space post of yours!!
Thanks for all the work you do for us ;=)
Right to my favorites and space folder it goes to erupt forever!!!

Mimi – volcanic ejecta can be a variety of colours depending on what it is that’s been thrown out – felsic or dacite for example is very light in colour whereas basalt or mafic are darker. I’m guessing you are thinking of the typical Hollywood image of grey pyroclastic flows which are turbulent mixtures of hot gases and unsorted fragmented material including crystals, ash, pumice, and glass shards.
