STS-107, the Space Shuttle Columbia’s final flight, launched January 16, 2003. The seven-member crew were killed two weeks later when the shuttle disintegrated during re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere due to damaged sustained to its heat shielding tiles at launch. Restored in Photoshop CS3 & Noise Ninja.

No trees were killed in the sending of this message. However, a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.
