This is the first image released into the public domain from the new Apollo Image Archive. These are films from the Apollo Mapping (or Metric) camera flew on three missions, Apollos 15, 16, and 17. They have literally been kept on ice unseen for three decades to preserve the film quality in freezers at the Johnson Space Centre but are now being digitised using high resolution Leica scanners. This is a huge reduction of the full image that is a 450MP 1.3GB RAW file but still carries over a lot of the originals detail.

What an amazing shot this is and to think that's it's been taken care of by some true visionaries that saw the day coming when photographic technology would catch up with our ability to capture such an image. Thanks for sending this along :)

"The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place; from the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing shape, from a spider’s web." Pablo Picasso

The beer urges me on, the bewitching beer, which sets even a wise man to singing and to laughing gently and rouses him up to dance and brings forth words which were better unspoken. Homer (800 BC - 700 BC), The Odyssey (note: beer substituted for wine)
