A couple of shots from ESA’s Envisat satellite – this image highlights Japan, which consists of a string of islands stretching for some 2400 km through the western Pacific Ocean. Japan's four main islands, running from north to south, are Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. The archipelago includes some 3000 additional smaller islands. Mountains cover two-thirds of the country’s land surface; each of the main islands has a central mountainous chain.
