A day’s clouds. The shape and texture of the land. The living ocean. City lights as a beacon of human presence across the globe. This beautiful view of Earth from space is a fusion of science and art. Drawing on data from multiple satellite missions collected over 13 years, a team of NASA scientists and graphic artists created layers of global data for everything from the land surface, to polar sea ice, to the light reflected by the chlorophyll in the billions of microscopic plants that grow in the ocean.

Yes – the attention to detail is very good – the atmosphere is apparently part of the artists input as it is airbrushed on to finish off the whole effect. Reading the full descriptions on NASA’s blue marble site it is incredible the amount of data that has gone into these renderings – many, many layers of different kinds of data including weather satellite data, topography mapping by shuttle and ISS astronauts etc.
