Tucked between Siberia and Russia’s frozen Kamchatka Peninsula, the Sea of Okhotsk was a field of ice when the NASA’s Terra satellite captured this image. The flow of cold Arctic air and its effect on the sea are evident from this image. Large chunks of sea ice float on the water, separated by cracks through which the black surface of the sea is evident. Frigid Siberian winds sweeping in from the northwest meet moist air over open water creating cloud formations called clouds streets.

Quite an oblique image but I thought it made for a great natural desktop picture.

Very 'cool' - I've always liked aerial and satellite photos! Have flown by/over there - but never at that altitude(!?); have never seen it in mid-winter either. Thanks for posting it!

I don't know if you did any retouches but this is one of the crispest sattelite images I've ever seen. It's also dramatic and awe inspiring.
