Most crane operators don’t use words like “ballet” and “pirouette” when describing their work, but most crane operators don’t perform the delicate task of manoeuvring a space shuttle several hundred feet in the air, sometimes with only inches to spare.
The process of assembling the launch vehicles components is still controlled completely manually. Lifting the shuttle onto the external fuel tank alone calls for a team of about 16 technicians controlling two 400 tonne cranes and normally takes between 20 and 24 hours. Once the shuttle is lifted into the assembly bay between the platforms, there is just inches of clearance as you can see from this shot.

I would have thought they worked in a very large space to assembling the shuttle. That's what I get for thinking :). This work is done in the VAB?
Another great job of cleaning up/enhancing a NASA image for me to show to my grandkids.
I have told the kiddies that my friend Phil does these pictures for them. Now they ask me "Mimi does your friend Phil have any pictures for us today"? They do that because when I have d/l new images of yours, I tell them:) It keeps their interest piqued without overloading them. Their attention span isn't too long..lol They are so cute. Now even the 5 year old is getting into the looking at your NASA shots!
Many thanks for doing this for me to share and educate my little angels :=)
