The successful liftoff of the Expedition 18 crew onboard a Soyuz spacecraft at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

It may not have the glitz and drama of the Cape but these workhorses of the stars continue to perform very well. the desert light made for a ropey photo so this has been given significant boosts in CS3 and Tiffen DFX.

An image worth it for no other reason than to grind John McCain's gears to see the Stars & Stripes displayed proudly on a Soviet rocket.

ooh, I liked it until it got political. I guess it just goes to show that America builds very good stuff! Even the Motherland wants a piece of it! HAHA :P

its kind of the other way around here :-)

The politics in question is the deranged senators lobbying of congress to prevent NASA from buying services from Roscosmos to fill the void between the Shuttle's retirement and the launch of the new Ares rockets - some five years. McCain insisted NASA should extended the lifespan of the Shuttles as he 'didn't trust the Russians' (nice way to lay out your foreign policies John). NASA objected to this as the huge costs involved would delay the Constellation program and they could not guarantee the safety of the ageing fleet - estimating that if it continued flying well into the next decade - the chances of catastrophic failure would be only 1 in 12.

Fortunately, Congress seems to think he's an idiot as well and look like they will allow NASA to continue their relationship with the Russians.

just to be completely bipartisan, Senator Obama's view of the space industry is not much better - he has said that to fund many of his election promises he will either reduce tax breaks for corporate fat cats or delay the moon and mars manned missions. anyone taking bets on which of those options he will choose?
