NASA's Space Shuttle Program conducted the final test firing of a reusable solid rocket motor on Feb.25 in Promontory, Utah. The motor burned for approximately 123 seconds - the same time each reusable solid rocket motor burns during an actual space shuttle launch.

The test marks the closure of a test program that has spanned more than three decades. The ATK-built motors have successfully launched the space shuttle into orbit 129 times.

no - i guess not - just one big old sauna I imagine! :-)

I wonder if they will keep the site out of historical interest. it looks quite impressive when idle as the sandy earth has been changed to large fields of glass due to the repeated exposure to extreme heat

I wonder how many times they needed to test fire solid rocket engines. If it is like the rocket engines, they send them to Stennis for takedown after every mission. They rebuild them, then test fire them for 480 seconds. It is the same amount of time for a complete launch. What a waste.

Nice picture! Awesome colors. This matches perfectly with the Windows Classic theme.

Ted - I think they tested the SRB's on average once per year which doesn't seem too excessive.
