High marks for composition, Mike. But I have to agree with Viking Boy that there seems to be a bit of blur here. The colors are also very vibrant and true to life as well.
If it weren't for the blurring, this would be a fantastic shot of a beautiful bird. With the way the water is (the shapes and textures it creates) and the good contrast between the coloring of the merganser and the water this would be right up there with some of the best bird shots on here I have no doubt about it! I'd try shooting with a tripod or if one isn't available or is forgotten (like I so often do!) leaning up against and gently resting the side of the lens against a tree or a pole helps immensely in a pinch.
