Hummingbirds stake out a feeding territory, one they will defend quite ferociously. So while in the woods I spied this little fellow feeding on this particular plant. He would flit from flower to flower sipping nectar, then would take off for another set and let this one produce more nectar then return about 45 minutes later. I saw him do this twice, so I set myself down and waited. Sure as can be 45 minutes later he was back. I photographed him 5 more times in 3 1/2 hours before my tired old rear end gave out and I had to leave. My only regret is that I was never able to catch his Ruby colored Throat on film. I'll try again another day. For those that are wondering I was shooting from a distance of 25 ft (7.62 meters) from him with a 1000mm lens.

Amazing capture. Maybe next time you'll catch one of his throat. The green on his back and the purple flowers are plenty good enough for me.

Wonderful capture Mike! I have noticed a similar mating behaviour. The male will make a series of very fast approaches at the female along the horizontal and once he reaches her will turn 90 degrees and go straight up about 30 feet. At least I believe it is a mating season ritual. They are very impressive creatures. Thanks for sharing:-)

Michael I envy you. I have been wanting to get one of those into a shot myself, but I don't see many here, lol.
Great shot.

What a great show of patience for a great image! Good capture Michael. I love these fascinating birds. I feed them right outside my kitchen window & get a kick out of their territorial habits. They need so much nectar, yet they will take time to chase another hummer away from "their" feed station. Good color, qaulity & clarity. Into my fav's & thank you :)

Superb shot! Did you use a 1000mm reflex or a 500mm with a 2X converter? I would assume a reflex, but looking at how good the bokeh is, it made me curious.
