In keeping with the last few days of soft focus I'm presenting this image. I photographed this little May Fly with a 200mm f-4 Canon Macro lens. In order to get the soft focus here (I'm going to share one of my secrets here) I used a flat black women’s’ knee high nylon stocking stretched across the front of the lens. All held in place with a rubber band. The larger the aperture the more pronounced the effect. This image was shot at f-5.6. That was done in order to maintain the out-of-focus background. That isolates the subject, making it stand out, especially if the background is pretty much the same color and contrast.

very neat image, it doesnt look like too much from the thumbnail, but the full size gives a really neat effect. very nice blured background, and the detail is still remarkable on the bug. the only thing i find odd is the little "halo" around the bug. i trust it's from the stocking somehow, but it reminds me of a shoddy cut-out and blurr job in photoshop :P i guess my experience with PS has made me not appreciate these little odities as much, but an amazing image nonetheless

The effect on the wings is amazing, gives it a magical feel. And now onto other matters......so we know you keep womens stockings in your camera bag...Hmmm, what other garments are stashed in there Michael (just kidding). Beautiful image. Well done. Cheers Al.

I don't how I missed this Michael, but I sure am glad I found it!!! This is a "must see full size" image! I am impressed as all get-out over the simplicity of the 'filter' you used to achieve this astonishing effect. Quite a dramatic photo. Straight into my fav's on my HD & a 10+ ...thank you :))

Dang Michael! That's a neat trick! I will have to start carrying womens stockings with me wherever I go. Wonder what the guys at the airport are going to say about that?

I love the composition here Mike. The sharpness with the glow is real eye catching. I also appreciate the technical tips, It’s not possible to have to many of them :-)
