This cactus with its ring of blossoms just seemed to make a good subject for me. As the emphasis is on the blossoms I decided to use a selective depth of field and only show several of the buds in sharp focus. The mind tells us that the objects are repetitious and we don't need to have them in focus to know what they are. In fact if too many of them are in focus one looses themselves in the business of the image and it looses impact.

Michael, I have heard that the cactus flowers, but I have never seen it!
They are just lovely. I would love to see a macro of one bud with a black velvet background, lol.

Well, you've certainly achieved the impact you were hoping for...the flowers are beautiful...sharp and detailed...and those spikes look quite threatening up close!...great work.:Pat.

I agree about the focus. If all the flowers had been in focus to the back you might have paid little attention to the perfect pattern of the thorns, or the veins in the petals. Great post.

I must say I find the composition of this shot a bit offputting. It seems that you meant to capture the entire "ring" of flowers but the edges were cut off slightly. Even though I know this probably wasn't the case, it's what my eye picks up on.I hope you get what I mean. I think I would prefer it if the flowers on the left were cut off altogether. Other than that it's a great shot, those flowers are really beautiful.

I have to agree with Sam here, the composition seems to "cut off" the wholeness of the subject; it's like cutting off the top of a head in a portrait -- you may think the eyes are the most important part, but the whole head should be in the shot. I think the same analogy works for this.

Certainly *not* a bad photograph though; the colors and vision are wonderful.

Very tidy picture. Well done. Inspirational. I understand the previous comments about how much the subject fills the frame, and cuts off some of the image, but I often prefer the intimate closeup, which expands the picture in the mind as we explore what could be beyond the boundaries.

Hard work never killed anybody, but why take a chance?
