In the remote villages of India this is how some of the farmers (still) plough their paddy fields as they can't afford a tractor. The Ox are cared well and treated like family members. It's 12 PM in the noon and the farmer was busy with his work. In some parts of India like the one above farmers can have double harvest in a year where there is sufficient water supply, in this case there is a lake very near by which remains full for the most of the year except during the months of April and May (peak of summer season). Farmers have a special place in India and this is dedicated all of them. Took this photo just a day before the Kodachadri trip. All comments are welcome

Nice writeup! Appreciate your deference to the farming community. I like the picture! It could be even better IMHO if you give more prominence to the guy and the cart. I tried a crop where the top starts just below the cable, goes through the grass on the left and the bottom starts just below the water. Jsut a thought.

Hey Prashanth
I have to agree with jpk40 this is a super shot of the farmer but I think if you cropped out a little around him and brought him a little closer that would be a really great shot! We here never see this kind of work being performed anymore! It is a real testament to people who can really work!

I agree with both of you, jp and paul. I tired that one before putting this image, and now that you mention it I feel that would have been the right thing. During uploading the image somehow felt I need to include the banana plants in the rear end which is cultivated by the same farmer needs to be included as well. Well there is lot more to learn for me and I'm determined to get it right sooner :)

Hey Prashanth...It's interesting learning about farming over there verus the farmering sytle here where I am. This farmer reminds me of the Amish farmers who do not believe in using any electricity.

I gotta say the same as everyone else...need to crop it just a tad. Other than that, a great shot!

Well, I can't resist putting another two cents in here. Since you are so open to suggestions and gracious about such as well. :o)

Here you go ... hope you don't mind, as I downloaded your image here ... performed a bit of post processing/editing in CS3 Photoshop and a suitable crop that fits my eyes, anyways. Compositionally speaking.

"Ploughing Paddy Fields - Cropped"

/\ Simply some creative food for thought for you.

Keep shooting and happy shooting, Prashanth. :o)

Right, almost forgot ... I did not clone out or remove the cable/wire. Which is not hard to do, time consuming? Lil' bit. Hard? Not really.

Which is why I qualified the crop performed in my above words by stating "compositionally speaking".

Some people have a visual aversion to power lines and such. Didn't attempt to crop to crop out that element. As I agree with you on the aspect of keeping the background plants within frame for more context.

That's another interesting way to present the same image. I love the way you have presented the same image :)
I didn't expect this image would create so much positive discussions, now I'm glad that I didn't crop it, otherwise I'd have ended with wow! and amazing comments only. Thanks for all the comments and suggestions guys... I really appreciate it.

Nice capture friend... just reminds me of childhood days where I have always seen farmers using bullock to plough the fields. Many of them treated these animals as their family. Nowadays work is done mostly with the help of tractors and other machines.

There are advantages to the new system where the animals were freed from this hectic work. Helped farmer to cover larger area within less time,....

Just wanted to present a farmer busy with his work Sreejith. There are farmers in my parts who still use the old meathods because they can't afford the machine tools. And few brave souls who have dared to get the new tools sometimes end up with huge loans because of a bad crop yeild one year. I intentionally kept the water flowing through the channel which shows the pesticides residuals floating on the surface of the water to suggest how much people are using chemicals on their farm lands.

I looked at the crop Les had a link for. I guess you had a quick lesson. That's a good thing. I have had lots of lessons here. Thanks for sharing this image.

Thanks for sharing the image and explanations behind it. It's been about 30 years since I've seen oxen used for farm work in my part of the world. Nowadays they are mainly used for show purposes. Nice image in any event whether cropped or not.

I really like the subject of this photograph Proshanth and my very first thought was to crop it to the left and the bottom, but reading up the comments I see Les has suggested that and given an example. The reason is that anything that appears in a third of the picture gives the image a good balance and brings that subject to the attention of the viewer. Keep taking photographs - the subjects you are choosing are good and it makes a nice change for someone to appreciate comments and suggestions from other photographers. :)
