Gila (hee'-la) Woodpecker taking care of the family in a sahuaro cactus. This one is a male - females don't have the red 'cap'. They are one of only two species of birds that make holes in these cacti for nesting, but many other species use them afterwards. They are also traditional woodworkers like other woodpeckers.

What a unique capture of a bird. I have not heard of these types of woodpeckers that burrow into cacti. They sure are brave~ This is well composed with good color, high quality and good color. Thank for the excellent comment to explain what this is. Good job. Thank you for sharing this with us :~)

Excellent capture. I think I detect a slight doubling (movement) near the top of the head, but it could be display I'm currently using. The composition is well done.

Well isn't he a smartie. Great use of a cactus! It's cute how one can see another birds head (baby?) in the hole. Nice shadow play on the cactus. Appreciate your giving info on this bird. Thanks for sharing this cute guy!
