On the other side of these mountains lies Spain. This is the Pyrenees range separating France from Spain, and on this day the clouds obscured the tops of the highest peaks. This view is from a fortress built during the years after treaties moved the border from southern France into the Pyrenees.
To get this shot I had to climb a mountain on a mile-long foot-path, then find the postern gate over the eastern cliff-face in the curtain wall of the castle. Finally I had to cling to the cliff-face while shooting the photos which I would later stich into the panorama. My perch was every bit as high as it looks in the image. I was single back then. Such feats of daring-do will not recurr now that I have a wife, believe me.
