Springtime is when all the flowers bloom and the animals emerge to begin life's cycle anew. It is a photographer's dream. Last Friday while shooting some photos it almost became this photographer's nighmare. This little lady* was basking in the sun when I stepped on her. She moved. I saw her. I moved - away. Like most boys I went through a herpetology phase, so I can recognize the triangular head of a water mocassin - one of the snakes of south Louisiana whose bite has ended the lives of many a Louisiana resident. Since my little friend was just coming out of hibernation she was unable to strike. This blind luck is why I am here to share her with you.

* No animals were harmed in the shooting of this photograph

the clarity focused on the head is prefect.. i really like the green leaves on the left.. gives the photo some wonderful contrast..

and yes Regmar, youre a lucky son-of-a-gun.. those are quite the nasty ones when they are "awake".. i just "removed" one from the house here a couple days ago.. glad you made it out safe and with a great capture..

You know what was cool about this situation is that she let me live, so I let her live. The cycle of life continues

stump tail, cotton mouth, all kinda names for em in the area, you need a good pair of rubber boots, reg...if you're gonna do too much bush hunting...later in the season, they will hiss before they strike if you're lucky and you will remember the smell forever...

It is TRULY amazing that this snake didnt get ya' !! I lived in Louisiana, near some bayous for a while, and I'll never forget the snakes in the water where I was trying to learn HOW to waterski! But you did a great photo here! Actually from what I remember these guys'll go right through most boots. The smart guys at UNO say the only way to protect against them is with wire-mesh snake-boots.

Wow regmar.it is a good thing you have one of those fancy cameras with the anti-shake device on it!! Hope you used the 12x zoom!! (hehe.)...I ..cannot imagine stepping on this snake and then having the presence of mind to STAY there and photograph her. You would still be trying to find me!!!! Excellent capture of a fascinating albeit cold subject and the story is...well chilling too! Glad you are here amongst us still!! Well done :~)

Good capture. I'd probably be shaking too much to take a picture. Glad you weren't bitten.

Handmaiden to history, chronicler of the mind and the heart, writing is humankind’s most far-reaching creation, it’s forms and designs endless. During the U.S. civil war, for example, a union soldier’s letter home was written in two directions to save scarce paper. In India an artisan made such limitation a virtue by inking an article’s bylines on grains of rice. And the words you are now reading were written on a computer equipped with some 800 styles of type. Yet the purpose of writing remains unchanged: to convey meaning, whether playful, mundane, or profound.

Hmm.. In my EMT class I learned that 50% of snake bites are dry, and its rare that someone in the united states dies from a snake bite. Looks like im gonna have to do some research. Anyways lucky shot.
