While walking in the forest I suddenly realized that the trees around me were covered with caterpillars, and the air around me was full of dragonflies. I don't know if the two events were related, but it made me stop and realize how beautiful these blue irridescent caterpillars were, and to record them for us all.

Can't think of anytime I've seen blue caterpillars. I wonder if the events were related.

Forest tent caterpillars. And, this is probably one of the best photos on them I've seen. Nice dof too. They definately invade!

Great shot of the little beasties. I have witnessed a car loosing control and sliding into the ditch because of the slick of worms that didn't look both ways before crossing the highway. They are sure photogenic though;-)

We have tent caterpillars here every 7 years as swarms! It seems to last about 3 summers in total. Like Darryl said, they can be dangerous! Sometimes you can't walk out the doors without brooming a path. We dislike them very much in Canada and they are very destructive as B.J. said. They kill all of the leaves off of the trees and plants on the ground as well. Our blueberry harvests have suffered a great deal the last 3 years. This year will be better.

Wonderful picture, but as June stated, not liked very much up here in Canada *shudders* Awful things eat everything and make huge messes.

If I am not mistaken, there are three caterpillars in this picture: the two in the foreground, and another that spans the entire frame on the other side of the twig. Anyways, great shot. I'll have to look through more of your gallery.
