This winter has been a mild one so far in New Orleans (fortunately since many still have no electricity or gas), and it has tricked some of the local plants into an early bloom. This palmetto was given to believe that spring has come when in fact our local groundhog (a nutria rat actually) has revealed to us that we are in for several more weeks of winter.

Regmar, the weather here is the same. I have daffodils already in bloom and we are expecting temps in the 20's at night soon. I really like the way the young blooms in this photo look exactly like the mature ones already- very interesting. I've never noticed this before and my sister has palmettos in her yard. I will check hers out next time I visit. Thanks for showing me something new today. Eileen

Art is the perception of the creator. Meaning is the perception of the viewer. acceptance is the perception of society.

I love the colors and the light in this image Regmar, It almost appears as though the palmetto is lit from deep in it's center. Is that all new growth that is the lighter green? Are they called fronds? I am full of questions tonight! :).....I have downloaded this onto my hard drive and in my favorites folder. It makes a great desktop and gives me hope that Spring isn't far away despite what the nutria rat revealed ;=) thanks for the cool post!

Hey there!! I must tell you this fern is outstanding . The way you capture the new fronds growing out like that. Its like a burst of a water fountain. ITs so beautiful. Those greens and then the sunshine look in the center. Its so good to see your postings. I have missed them a lot..I love the colours you chose for the framing in this. Its very fitting. The weather has done the same thing here too. All sorts of things are coming out to see the sun. I am moving to a little farm in the countryside, and there are tons of things popping out, they will be nice surprises for me. I hope the people in New Orleans are doing ok . I keep all of you in my prayers!...many hugs to you..verena

It is not a palmetto nor a fern, it is a sego palm.

The work of art may have a moral effect, but to demand moral purpose from an artist is to make him ruin his work. (Johann Wolfgang von Goethe - 1832)

Smarty Pants. Now we're going to have to rename Palmetto Avenue to what? Sego Palm Way? It just dosn't seem right. By the way, you look just awful in your new thumbnail :-)

Great capture. The young palm fronds resemble the octopus arms. So fresh and vivid. However your story seems a science fiction to me, lol. With 40 cm of snow I cannot even wade through the snowpiles without getting wet.

You have captured this image with good sharpness and composition. Its well balanced leafs and creating a rhythm in the shot and the similar looking colors adds beauty.

Happy Valentine's Day, Regmar!...now this is just what I was referring to in my comments under your bio...the way you bring such style and feeling into any kind of image...it can be seen in the way you have chosen to focus tight on that flesh colored center and those reaching fronds and the corresponding title...very well captured and good to see life rebounding in your area despite the deception of the weather.:Pat.
