The wife and I spent our last holiday driving around south Louisiana photographing the decaying fortifications that litter this area from the War of 1812. Now I confess I have trouble photographing these things, because they are so big. Very few "artistic" photos came out of the cold day's work, but I did turn my camera skyward at one point as this curious fellow came around to investigate the rocks we were skipping on the surface of the Gulf of Mexico. He turned out to be the only good shot of the day.

Most artistic appeal ...
But I would love to see some fortifications too - even if for the instruction rather than artistic values. LOL

I like your presentation here. The comp is effective and the photo itself is good. The white line in the border seems a little to intrusive to me however.

First tanks for your advice on my "Pileated Woodpecker" and as you said "It's tough to capture wildlife, isn't it?" When the subject moves to different location, from under the shade to bright sun, as you are chasing it I often use the Auto and spot exposure reading. I shoot first to capture and if I'm given a second chance, then I would do the correction.
You having problem shooting big things, fortifications... Not true... You have one of the best pictures of Carcassonne that I ever seen and I have also been there and knows how hard it is to shot something other than the main gate and not much interesting details of the fortification either.
PhotoShop CS has a great feature "Shadow/Highlight" that could improve the detail of the seagull's neck and lighten it's underside.
It's a nice capture and your white lines do not bother me at all.
