In South Louisiana, Bayou Lafourche once connected the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico. When the English cleansed Eastern Canada of the Acadian people in 1755, the Acadians found themselves deported to South Louisiana, and they took to the fishing trade which many still ply today. All along Bayou Lafourche today the Acadians' fishing boats still line the docks. Their livelihood has been threatened of late, however. Cheap unregulated seafood imports from Asia combined with rising fuel prices have driven many to leave the trade, while Hurricane Katrina destroyed many of the boats of the remaining people. This boat is a mute reminder of that hurricane, lifted from its watery home and abandoned high and dry like so many of the people of the region.
