I really like street (water) scenes. Your picture is loaded with detail and clarity. And, there are people in Leiden? So many shots are sans people. Rob, this is an excellent shot.
Super detail and a painted feel to this one, which I happen to love. I think I must have been a painter in another life, or am to become one.. :)
I often wonder what the basements of these buildings are like. If I lived here, of course I'd have the answer ready to hand, but it does make me wonder.
"I never looked for it, gave it no name; yet I knew it always, when the gift of peace came. I stood quite still for the moment that it lasted...Then the light shifted slightly and the moment passed, leaving me...with the lasting echo of its presence.." Diana Gabaldon
You will be led to the knowledge of the internal things which are invisible to you, by the external things which you see before you. . . . Even so then, we can represent to ourselves in thought the Author of all that is, by contemplating and admiring the (visible) things which He has made, and ever brings into being.

Just to respond to the question raised by PJ: the buildings in the historical centre of Leiden, like those in other cities in the Netherlands, are built on foundations made by wooden poles. There can be a lot of them: the royal palace in Amsterdan counts 13.659 of them (source wikipedia, I didn't count them). Incidentally, they can rot. This is usually a Pretty Bad Thing and it can seriously dent your wallet (or leave you without a roof) when it happens :-0.
