Instead of rushing to work, grabbed a couple of photos of a curly bamboo plant as lit by the morning sun. The reflections are my sink counter in the foreground and my kitchen table in front of the kitchen window. Canon SX10IS.
If not for the benefit of your accompanying narrative, your image here is perplexing with respect to the captured reflections.
Being bold here ... hope you don't mind ... not sure if your composition as presented to us ... works as well as it could?
Backing up the constructive critiquing truck ... I do enjoy and like the quality of light you did capture in the background. Difficult and challenging conditions that you and your camera handled well.
Now then ... cutting to the chase ... the central placement of the vase and bamboo?
Think, in my humble opinion of course, that if you had squared off the actual window within and with respect to the frame of your photo ... might be more effective in conveying that 'Zen' mood and feel.
Or ...
Offset the placement of the vase and bamboo.
And still being bold, perhaps some post editing adjustments and/or some sort of 'fill flash' to bring out some more of the details in the foreground and focal subject might provide an assist as well.
As a suggestion ...
Perhaps some more experimentation with shooting times (the changing angles of light, for example ... a little earlier/later might create a or stronger diagonals) and compositional changes might be a worthy artistic pursuit?
That said ... there is definitely something intangible (or not?) about your photo here that is appealing. Brought me in for a closer look, so, mission accomplished.
Thanks for sharing this tranquil view with us. :o)
I have an alternate version of the photo with an alternate composition which I will post in the next few days. I did experiment with some fill-in flash, although then the colors of the counter-top and the plant destroyed the whole mood of the photo.
My thought was to center the plant as to emphasize the symmetry, although centering may partly reduce it to looking like a snapshot.
I appreciate the comment about not squaring-it-off; the lack of a perfect rectangle was only noticeable when I cropped it a bit....I will enable the 'grid view' in my viewfinder in future photos, as that's what this camera feature is for.
+1 purmusic, he has put everything in words in a beautiful way. I have greatly benefited by listening to purmusic's tips and it has helped me immensely, I hope it helps you too. Nothing else to say, thanks for sharing. Good work, keep clicking and sharing
