My entry into Pat's contest. I have many spots that go to for their tranquitity, but when I want stillness I return over and over to this spot. It is a huge area, what you see here is perhaps ten percent or less of the total grounds. Usually, near sunset, there are onlt two of us here. Me, and a lone bugler. every night as the flag is lowered, Taps is played. The mournful, meloncholy sounds drifts over the grounds, until the final held, drawn note echoes lightly and recedes, leaving a perfect stillness behind. It is my way of honoring those that are serving now, including my son who is on his second tour in Afghanastan, and those who have come before us. There are times I sit until well after dark, enjoying the stillness, the solitude and reflect on my own thoughts...and pray for my Son and all the others in harms way. Thanx for the great suggestion for a contest Pat. Honesy comment and critique please.

Definately a very peaceful resting place... good capture of fading light, great color sky... My thoughts and prayers go out to your son may he stay safe.

Good luck in the contest

The sky has the perfect colouring and this is a very poignant photo. It is easy to understand that this is the perfect place for reflection. Godspeed that your son returns home safely and soon.

I can see your soul just fading into the stones & your heartaches merging with that painted sky for a few perfect moments out of time...... A restful place indeed.

I'm no photographer so I'm not really sure if stepping a tad to your right would've been a better thing to do, perspective wise or not. Personally, I like where you took your shot from as it gives the illusion that you, or we, are about to walk down the row.

That beautiful sky is the perfect counterpoint to the necessary darkness of your photo....... all in all Rich for me, I see very little to critique,, honest ! ;-)

Jackie's right, it is a good capture of fading light & heaven knows... as do you, I hope & pray your son comes home safe & sound, *hugs*

I can see why you would be drawn there. I like this angle, the flow of the land adding interest to those rows. Somber yet thought provoking narrative definitely add to the mood.

Wow, GBRx3. Your words are Rich with feeling. A great narrative. There is no way I could say anything negative about a scene like this. Good contest entry.

I love the lighting on this, Rich. Enough left from the setting sun to illuminate the stones quite clearly. Nothing quieter than a graveyard that I can think of. The sky is wonderful.

The peaceful ending of a day in a peaceful place... The light is exquisite and it gives an inner glow to the white of the headstones that seems like an extra dimension. There are many ancient cemeteries here on the Cape with veterans of all American wars (including my Dad), and I too sometimes walk among the spirits seeking peace...
