It is so hard to make a 2D image look 3D, but you are on the right track it seems.

People are like cameras--sometimes they lose focus.
I like this, but I think the top half of the shot seems out of focus to me, the bottom seems more sharp. Just me probably.

I think I'm seeing what Starglow is seeing as well; so it's good to know my eyes aren't totally failing me yet. Nice textures and colour in the photo, Rob. Try playing with the lighting and shadows to add some depth.
