Rob, I miss a link in your narrative in order to compare the original B&W version with your edited version.
Think however that you've done not only the colorization process, but have given the right shoe of the man a more black appearance, ☺ ,because the contradiction with his left shoe is remarkable.
Maybe it was your way to express that the shoeshine boy had done a good job. To me you've done a (very) good job however, my friend!

Edit: Rob has edited his narrative by providing us the link that makes us able to do the comparison between the orignal B&W image and his edited one.
Makes me smile because I was right about the righ hand shoe, ☺ ☺ ☺ .

I'm sure this is a posed photo, since the pantaloons (short pants) of the "customer" indicates he's another youngster. In fact, every person in this photo is wearing pantaloons, something an adult would rarely be wearing. What interests me is the difference in shoe styles, the "customer" wearing firm leather shoes that have an almost-wingtip styling at the front, with that series of small holes. The boot black on his knees, however, is wearing something that could almost be a black precursor of a tennis shoe. Another thought-provoking image, Rob, and I like how you paired the light green of the kid's seersucker shirt with the deeper green of his polish bottle.

.....I like how you paired the light green of the kid's seersucker shirt with the deeper green of his polish bottle....

Didn't think anyone would notice but it does centre the focus on the black shoe good eye Nik (but don't go telling all my secrets ;0)..)

Based on his Oscar worthy speech at the end of Rambo: First Blood, Sylvester Stallone's tearful tribute to a blown-up friend has kept me well away from these shoeshine death boxes. And good advice it was too, since I'm still here. As are all of you who didn't see it. But watch it anyway, it's not just a one note performance, it's more like a two.
