This'll go over well at imgur and reddit, they love cat & dog pics of all kinds. This looks like a very difficult and time consuming edit too, or does the program isolate all the squares and stripes automatically? The simple addition of a few primary colors does wonders bringing the characters back to charming life. You've obviously hit on a lifetime vocation, the unpaid updating of all B&W photos in the Library of Congress. Your selfless and entirely voluntary toil will be clicked on countless times down through the ages, while the rest of us will fade away on obsolete and forgotten servers destined for teardown. Kinda puts everything in perspective doesn't it? Cats & dogs are forever.

I gave Russ (ryzst) kudos for his comment and I had to wonder about your colorization of the plaids and the process behind it. Mainly, are you able to select certain areas of a photo, exclusive of bordering areas, then change one particular color (in this case, black)?

In recent years, people have submitted videos of babies and animals playing musical instruments, all too obviously performed by hands behind a background cloth, immediately behind the child or cat (or whatever). That is the process here except the background is more solid, and miniature clothing hides the supporting element (hands, bracket, etc.). In North Dakota history, a woman named Nancy Hendrickson lived in a small claim shack, about 25 miles outside my home town, and she found a unique way to survive the financial obstacles created by the Great Depression of the late 1920's and 30's. Using her camera and enlisting her farm animals and pets and her husband (not to be confused with the aforementioned), she created miniature scenes, props, and costumes to create unique photos that were then turned into postcards. Selling these locally popular items kept the Hendricksons fed and their creditors at bay. She used a number of different animals, and even birds, but her cat photos were some of the most popular... like this one, and this one, and this one, and this one.

Nik and Russ thank you both for your informative comments made for some interesting reading liked the links that Nik provide they work very interesting. As to The question Russ asked ......or does the program isolate all the squares and stripes automatically?......

When I colorize I work in layers I isolated the garment with the selection tool and gave it the color red (when you fill the selection you get a flat red no texture of the garment). Then I choose one of the blend modes that I thought worked best so the black stripes of the cat garment went dark red and the white stripes went light red/pink. Then I used the transparency tool on the red brought the slide down to about 3/4 the dark red went to light red. The light red/pink went transparent for about 98%. It's a trick of the eye that you don't see the red glow in the white. I could remove it but did not want to spend too much time on the image (totaal work 25 minutes including some Java blend).

A very interesting post, Rob. Not only because of the perfectly edited/colorized photograph (with a very high 'cute factor') with accompanying narrative, but because of the comments of Russ and 'Nik', and your additional comment as well. The latter confirms to me that it's a heck of a job. My amazement grew when I read that you can do this within 25 minutes. You're not only a very skilled artist but a magician too, ☺ ☺ ☺ !
