Although the publication date of this image was 12 years after the great Crash of Wall Street, many people in the U.S. (and elsewhere, other countries' fortunes often tied to our own) were still struggling financially, personal ethnicity notwithstanding. The irony is that salvation in the guise of a world war was less than a month away, when Germany invaded Poland on September 1st. The real irony, though, is that the war economy of the next 6 years, in the midst of massive deaths, destruction of property, and the loss of personal liberties, is what brought our country out of last effects of the Great Depression. We recovered while the rest of the world was devastated. This young girl's family survived all of this (I'm assuming, of course) because we were never invaded, our infrastructure still intact. Our economy's main thrust was one of war supply production, not of recovery. The images you've been choosing to share with us, Rob, evoke much more than just a sense of nostalgia, and your colorization brings them back to life. Having practically lived in the darkroom in college (I grew moss on me on all four sides, I think), I have a great appreciation for the pathos of black & white, but I do enjoy your adaptations as well. As always, kudos, my friend.

What makes this image captivating is her eyes. Making them blue really creates a focal point for the overall picture.

This made me think of my favorite book Rob. The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. I might read it again after seeing this. An entire generation of young people was affected by the depression and you could see it the way they tried to provide for their children years later. No wonder Tom Brokaw calls them "The Greatest Generation."
Superb work on this one.

Rob - An era, not only in the US, in which devastated economies placed people is situations such as this - living a migrant life following crop planting and harvesting. Imagine tick cloth for a roof and burlap for walls, a rudimentary, make-shift (and unsafe) stove, and a few utensils to call home. Great work in the colorization process.

If I could tell the story in words, I wouldn't need to lug around a camera. ~Lewis Hine The Earth without art is just 'eh'.
