Rob, I think that the one girl is adding some nail polish to the finger nails of the other one in order to make her charming, and somewhat shy, appearance even finer than it already is. With the original B&W capture one can only guess for the result.

With your apt and perfectly done colorization, you've achieved a superlative result: it's like the girl on the right is coming from a more recent era now, ☺ !

Perfect capture of a moment in time beautifully coloured.
I think she has borrowed her mother's shoes - with the heels they look odd with socks but maybe that was fashionable then !
