A tiny fly the size of the proverbial grain of rice. Check out the paddle shaped pad under the forward foot. An interesting insect adaptation of a shoe. Shot hand-held at about 4.5X with the Canon MP-E 65 macro lens & a ring flash.

Simply amazing Russ. I find the eye also interesting, as you pointed out the foot pad, in the multiple colors it contains. It makes me wonder how it uses those colors for whatever sight it has.

Happy New Year, Russ! ~~ John

Thanks for the feedback on my macro shots.

For luckyshot:

Just so we're talking about the same lens, you can see a good review of the one I use at Luminous Landscape.

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/lenses/mp-e-65.shtml

Because of the MP-E 65's small objective lens, a flash is needed. The Canon MR-14EX ring flash I use clamps to the front end of the lens and puts a lot of light on the subject.

Many macro shooters like to use the Canon MT-24EX Twin-Lite because of it's greater ability to generate shadows and the appearance of depth. Those who use the Twin-Lite setup often say they don't like the 'flat' light that comes off the MR-14EX, but I've been very pleased so far.
