Possibly Pepsis formosa, feeding here on desert milkweed. Knowing that this wasp has one of the most painful stings of any insect in the world didn't encourage me to get really close to them. This shot is from about 2 feet with a 100mm macro lens and a ring flash. They were out in force at the arboretum and one specimen was at least a third larger than this 2 inch one and much more aggressive too. The most intimidating critters I've photographed, so far.

I've heard about these insects...They do just as their namesake implies...Hunt down a tarantula, paralyze it by stinging the arachnid in its vulnerable underbelly, and then lay an egg on it...thus providing the larva with enough food to grow and develop into an adult wasp...

Nice close-up...Thanks for sharing...

Thanks for the nice comments.

Shooting these wasps, for me, is like being next to a stick of dynamite, with the fuse lit. Even fairly docile while feeding, they just ooze menace. And since they have a flight speed of at least 20 mph, it's best not to annoy them, since you can't outrun them.

The details and clarity are outstanding! Not too sure I would want to be that close to this kind of wasp:) Glad you didn't get stung.

Any insect that would take down a taranula is pretty cool in my book however, I wouldn't have gone near it. Much credit to you for being that brave and getting such a cool shot.

I'm in a story both funny and cruel. But am I the hero or am I the fool?

Thank you for the nice comments.

I'm still an 11 year old kid when it comes to these stunts. The 54 year old me says no way, but I indulge the daredevil occasionally. This could have turned out badly and I'll probably just observe them from a distance again.

So is a good comment all about the praise or is constructive criticism a good comment. all I see is people praising each other. I would would like real comments that help me with my work. That help me take better pictures. Perhaps camera settings, setup, etc.. Your thoughts on this?
