This was a matchhead-sized fly that I found parked on my new raspberry plants. I've never seen anything quite like it and in the viewfinder the eyes appeared to glow royal blue. It was very patient too, letting me take over 90 frames with a 180mm macro lens and this shot, taken at about 5X with the Canon MP-E65 macro lens and a ring flash. At 5X, the depth of field is about a quarter of a millimeter, or .010", so the focus point needs to be picked carefully. With insects, that's usually the eyes. This fly didn't appear to be doing any harm and only flew away after I accidently touched the leaf in was on. I just hope it's not a new pest in the area, like a new fruit fly.
