A lucky shot of a hover fly checking out a trumpet-shaped blossom. The flowers are produced by a large tree that has finger sized thorns all over its trunk. The blooms quickly fade and fall off within a few days, but when still fresh are very lovely. Taken at the Fullerton Arboretum with a Canon 6D, Canon 180mm macro lens & a ring flash.

Thank you both. I'm happy you enjoyed it.

The hover fly only hung around a second or two for this one shot, and the strobe can't recharge any faster than that. That's why it feels lucky.

Simply stunning capture. The entire scene is soft, subtle, yet has a brilliant effect. Colors, texture, subject matter are perfect. A Favorite for me.

I love the dark background that sets off the beautiful flower. The hover fly was a lucky catch. The composition and lighting are wonderful.

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

Thank you very much, everyone. So glad you liked it.

A lot of the qualities remarked on - deep colors, textures, a dark background, are effects of the ring flash. It eliminates a great deal of shadowing and lets the true colors of the flower stand out. And because the exposure is dominated by the extremely bright but short range flash, any ambient sunlight barely registers and the background goes dark. If you want to shoot close-up, I can't think of a better way to improve your pictures than to buy and learn how to use a ring flash.
