Another pre-1918 postcard brought back from Europe by my grandfather, Grover Hendricks, after his service with the US Army in WWI as an ambulance driver. By the card title I'm assuming the house was red and even gaudier than at first glance. Money always talks though, and you could have the biggest eyesore on the block with enough cash and bad taste. The novelty of being photo- graphed is apparent again with children and adults just stopping in the street and staring at the camera.

The house looks like a castle and no doubt belonged to someone very rich.
I looked it up and Chateau Rouge, also called "the Tombelle" is still listed as an old house in Ecommoy in the Belinois region.

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

Thank you very much, both of you. And LynEve, a special thanks for going the extra distance and actually trying to find the place. So I did a search of my own and found several other postcards of the same building and era, but from slightly different angles. No indication that the place still survives though. It also appears that the full name of the house was 'Chateau Rouge et rue de la Tombelle'.

Thanks for the heads-up Rob, but it's not the same place. Similar names, but I think the house in the above picture is gone. And you're right about the one from the link, it's a wreck.

A great series Russ and some interesting information provided by you and others.
I wonder if your grandfather ever met Ernest Hemingway while he was in the service.
Thanks for sharing all the information and postcards.

That's a great question Ron. My grandfather never talked about his time in the service, probably out of a wish to forget the horrors he'd seen. Hemingway was deeply traumatized by his experiences in WWI, but managed to turn those memories into literary classics. In the end though, his inner demons won the battle.
